The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) is a multi-stakeholder organisation set up to make global cotton
production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in and better
for the sector’s future. The Better Cotton Standard System is a pragmatic, innovative, highly
credible and constantly evolving system that is designed for scale and impact. There are
currently more than 2 million licensed BCI Farmers and over 2,100 BCI Members from across
the cotton sector working together to promote measurable and continuous improvements for the
environment, farming communities and the economies of cotton-producing areas. BCI aims to
transform cotton production worldwide by developing Better Cotton as a sustainable mainstream
BCI is growing and looking for an ambitious and process focused individual to coordinate the
GIZ (The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH, a German
development agency) funded programme in Maharashtra with two of our key Implementing
Partners (IPs). The goal of the programme is to improve cotton farming practices of BCI Farmers
with the specific objective to enable 140,000+ cotton farmers in Maharashtra to be trained in
Better Cotton farming practices and seek licensing as BCI Farmers in the 2021-2022 season,
as well as on-board approximately 60,000 new farmers in the 2022-23 season.
Funding will be managed in collaboration with Better Cotton Growth and Innovation Fund (GIF),
which was launched in 2016 by BCI to enable private and public actor participation in strategic
investments into the Better Cotton projects and propel BCI towards its 2020 targets of reaching
five million farmers and producing 30% of global cotton.
A designated project team within BCI will oversee general progress, coordinate among the
stakeholders (GIZ, BCI and the Implementing Partners) manage data collection at farm-level to
ensure performance of the GIZ-funded Implementing Partners, and ensure high-quality
documentation and reporting to GIZ. This position is in BCI’s India Implementation Team.

Reporting to: BCI India Assurance Manager based in India; and matrix-managed by the Grant
Management team in Europe.
The Senior Project Coordinator will work closely with BCI India’s Supply Chain team, Decent
Work Coordinator, and Grants Accountant – all based in India. In addition to this there will be
regular liaison with the Grants Management team, Global Implementation team, MEL team, and
Finance team based in London and Geneva.
Project Coordination
• Responsible for high-quality programme implementation during project lifecycle in close
coordination with the Project teams of the 2 GIZ-funded Implementing Partners (IPs).
• Maintain a close collaborative working relationship with the 2 IPs through regular checkin calls and provide real-time support as needed.
• Organise Monthly calls between the BCI India team with both GIZ-funded IPs to ensure
project milestones are on track, including facilitating meetings and ensuring
documentation is maintained of all meeting decisions and discussions.
• Organise Monthly meetings with the 2 GIZ-funded IPs, BCI-GIZ project management
team and GIZ, to report on status of project milestones to GIZ, and to ensure that all
potential implementation challenges are proactively raised via this platform.
• Support the India Assurance Manager to organise quarterly meetings between BCI and
GIZ to report progress to the donor till date - including facilitating meetings and ensure
documentation is maintained of all meeting decisions and discussions.
• Coordinating tasks and responsibilities among the BCI-GIZ project management team
and ensuring all team members, including the Project teams of the 2 GIZ-funded IPs are
clear on expectations and timelines. This includes developing reporting time-tables and
overseeing that high-quality Programmatic and Financial reportings are undertaken in a
timely fashion.
• Ensure that good financial stewardship is practised by the GIZ-funded IPs.
• Working closely with the Grants Accountant to ensure that required tendering processes
are followed and project level expenses are fully tracked and documented.
Programmatic Deliverables – tracking, monitoring, enabling
• Identify gaps in Implementation by the GIZ-funded IPs and provide support to improve
their performance.
• Provide timely information to the India Implementation Team on unique challenges or
opportunities in cotton farming faced by the Implementing Partners in Maharastra,
especially the GIZ-funded IPs.
• Identify GIZ Project-specific capacity building needs of staff and farmers, and work with
the India Capacity Building Manager to address these.

• Liaise between the India Supply Chain team and GIZ-funded IPs to improve supply chain
uptake from the Project areas.
• Ensure decent work, gender equality and supply chain uptake issues in the Project areas
are clearly understood and addressed through context-specific plans and interventions
developed in collaboration with the GIZ-funded IPs and concerned stakeholders.
• Support the 2 GIZ-funded IPs to forge external collaborations, partnerships and
convergence with government agencies and programmes which align with the Better
Cotton Standard.
• Understand the key programmatic deliverables as per donor requirements, and monitor
the progress against these via a logframe devised for this purpose.
• Work with IP & field staff, the BCI India Implementation Team and the Geneva-based
MEL team to ensure high-quality field-level and agronomic data is collected and
analysed periodically from the funded partners.
• Provide coordination support and oversight to GIZ-commissioned longitudinal study with
subset of Project farmers.
• Coordinate final, end-of-project evaluation study with independent third-party consultant.
Grant Management
• Maintain overview of all donor requirements, rules and regulations, and internal and
external deadlines and disseminate them to the GIZ funded IPs and BCI-GIZ project
management team.
• Organise a project kick-off workshop with the 2 GIZ-funded IPs to support and enable
their Project teams to understand the GIZ requirements, rules and regulations and
enable them to abide by those.
• Coordinate external donor audits and donor monitoring visits (COVID permitting), in
collaboration with Project teams of GIZ- funded IPs and BCI.
• Ensure all reporting commitments align to existing M&E protocols and the cotton season
annual cycles.
• Prepare high-quality programmatic reports as required by BCI and GIZ and submit them
in a timely fashion to the India Assurance Manager, and the Global Implementation and
MEL teams.
• Support the Grants Accountant to prepare high-quality financial reports as required by
BCI and GIZ and submit them in a timely fashion to the Finance team for review.
• Support the India Assurance Manager in donor reporting by coordinating, compiling,
editing and providing feedback to ensure the development of high-quality narratives and
timely submissions including narratives, budgets, budget narratives, work plans,
logframe and other required documents.

Contribute to India Implementation Team’s activities in Maharashtra
• In cooperation with the India Assurance Manager, contribute to the overall execution of
the Assurance Programme in Maharashtra.
• Work with the 2 GIZ-funded IPs to ensure that non-conformities and gaps in
implementation identified in their Producer Units during Assurance assessments are
appropriately and comprehensively addressed to prevent recurrence and to ensure
continuous improvement.
• Ensure that field-level seasonal reporting (required by the Assurance Programme) from
the GIZ-funded IPs is up-to-date and accurate on BCI’s internal database.
• In cooperation with the India Capacity Building Manager, support the quality execution
of Capacity Building Programme activities in Maharashtra.
• Ensure the 2 GIZ-funded IPs attend the BCI Capacity Building workshops, Training of
Trainers and effectively cascade the learnings from these Capacity Building activities to
field staff (i.e. Producer Unit Managers and Field Facilitators).
• Accompany the Relationship Manager during the Project Support Visits (Covid
permitting) of the GIZ-funded IPs and provide support to their Project Teams to
thoroughly follow-up on the agreed action plans.
• Through on-site visits (COVID permitting) or remote means, ensure that the GIZ-funded
farmers are provided adequate guidance and feedback to facilitate continuous
• Undertake all other duties that may be determined by the India Assurance Manager and
the India Country Director that are compatible with the job description.
• Maintain and ensure a culture of strict confidentiality - inter BCI staff and between BCI
staff and non BCI employees.
• Develop generic project communications materials as required for the wider BCI team
and the public.
To be successful, candidates for the Senior Project Coordinator role will have the following
University degree, or equivalent higher education qualification, in a relevant field
At least 8 years’ total experience in project management, preferably with monitoring and
evaluation experience
At least 5 years’ experience working in multi-cultural environments, including different
working styles and approaches to relationships, preferably gained through work with or for
an international organisation

Fluent in English and Marathi – ability to communicate clearly and concisely
Demonstrated experience in monitoring project budgets andpreparing narrative and financial
reports for donors
Proven ability to partner effectively internally to ensure successful completion of a
programme / project
Proven ability to collaborate effectively across different teams and cultures, strong
relationship building skills and service-oriented attitude
Experience in leading or coordinating collaborative programmes involving multiple partners
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to finding and
proposing solutions to challenges within clearly defined boundaries
Good communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, as well as
the ability to assimilate and process information for wide-ranging audiences.
A genuine interest in sustainable development and in working to change the lives of cotton
farmers in India
Proven experience in sustainability and the agricultural production sector
Good knowledge of gender equality and decent work issues in the agricultural sector
Excellent IT skills, including: Word; PowerPoint including ability to work with databases.
Willingness to carry out administrative tasks
Experience working with remote teams
Experience of working in both not-for-profit and profit-making organisations
Experience of working within the cotton sector
Knowledge of Marathi
Experience with standards systems and assurance, auditing or certification
Good understanding of knowledge management, learning and innovation
Understanding of the training-of-trainers process, monitoring & evaluation or standards
The position is based on Project funding (40 hours a week) and based in India. The Senior
Project Coordinator will receive a fixed-term contract of 18 months with an initial 3 month trial
period. Based on the funding status in the following seasons, contract could be extended. BCI
offers flexible working, with core hours being 10am – 4pm and the possibility of working from
