Help in Suffering (HIS) is one of India’s longest-serving and most respected animal welfare organisations. Founded in 1980 and based in Jaipur, HIS operates a full-service multispecies animal hospital and rescue system that responds to 20,000+ rescue calls each year and treats over 10,000 animals annually

Our work spans emergency rescue, veterinary treatment, humane dog population management (ABC), camel welfare, livestock support, adoption, and humane education. For many injured or abandoned animals in Jaipur, HIS is the only place where help arrives.

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Operations Director to lead and strengthen the organisation’s operational systems and teams.

The Role

The Operations Director will oversee the day-to-day functioning of HIS’s rescue, shelter, and operational systems, ensuring that the organisation delivers high-quality, humane, and efficient services to animals in need.

Reporting to the Managing Trustee, the role requires a leader who combines strong operational management skills with deep empathy for animals and people.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Oversee the functioning of shelter operations, rescue services, and support systems
  • Strengthen coordination between veterinary teams, rescue staff, shelter teams, and administration

Team Leadership

  • Lead and supervise operational staff including rescue teams, shelter supervisors, and support personnel
  • Build a culture of accountability, compassion, and collaboration

Process & Systems Improvement

  • Develop and strengthen operational systems, SOPs, and workflows
  • Introduce data-driven tracking and reporting to improve efficiency and outcomes

Resource & Budget Management

  • Oversee operational budgets, facilities, vehicles, and equipment
  • Ensure responsible use of organisational resources

Compliance & Coordination

  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and internal policies
  • Support coordination with government agencies, partners, and stakeholders

Candidate Profile

We are looking for someone who brings both operational discipline and a strong commitment to humane values.

Essential

  • 8–12 years of professional experience, including leadership or operational management roles
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams and complex operations
  • Strong organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills

Preferred

  • Experience in nonprofit organisations, animal welfare, healthcare, or service operations
  • Familiarity with shelter management, veterinary services, or field-based programs

Location

This is a full-time role based in Jaipur, with regular presence at the organisation’s shelter and operational facilities.

Compensation

Competitive within the nonprofit sector and commensurate with experience.
